“Origins”
The principal brass players of the SSO perform 19th century original works for brass quintet.
Headlining the program is Jean-François Victor Bellon’s Quintet No. 1. Part of a set of 12 written between 1848 and 1850, Bellon’s quintets were only discovered in the early 2000s and are now known to be the oldest works composed for an ensemble that resembles a modern brass quintet. This quintet is the first of a genre that attempted to elevate brass chamber music to the musical stature of the String Quartet—a four-movement chamber sonata, conservative in its form while progressive in harmonic design.
Written in 1890, Victor Ewald’s Quintet in B flat op. 5 is the first of a set of four that were long believed to be the to be the first original pieces composed for brass quintet, only recently displaced in the repertoire by the music of Bellon. Ewald’s lush harmonies and melodic phrasing show a successful integration of traditional musical structures with the influences of Russian nationalism and the music of Borodin in particular.
Both Bellon and Ewald wrote music that took advantage of the increased virtuosity and homogeneity possible as a result of developments in brass instrument design and manufacture in the second half of the 19th century. Specifically, Bellon’s instruments were brand new from the factory of Adolphe Sax, and concert reviews in the newspapers of the day recognized their novelty. If Bellon was, as his friends dubbed him “the Haydn of Brass”, Ewald would be its Beethoven. Their works represent extended examples of original literature in the Romantic style, which now form the corner stones of the quintet repertoire.
