Flora Morrison and Mary Northway, subjects of our So Went the Summer exhibition, spent 50 years of their lives together - well before relationships like theirs were publicly acknowledged. They met at summer camp, and later became educators, passionate about girls' outdoor education and the future of the discipline of Canadian Studies. Their summers were spent at the Miskin-Weller-Corrigan House in Carrying Place, home of Flora's adopted family, and their property on Lake Kushog in Haliburton known as Windy Pine. These were places where Flora and Mary could retreat from their public lives in Toronto and exist without external pressure or judgement - they could just be.
For this event, curatorial staff will be joined by former Trent University professors John Wadland and Julia Harrison, who will speak to Flora and Mary's joint life at Windy Pine, and the incredible friendships they built with other professional women of their time. The discussion will also touch on Flora and Mary's lives as queer women in the mid-20th century, and why the freedom that Windy Pine offered them and the women of their acquaintance who didn't ascribe to societal norms was so important. John and Julia's insights are informed by their personal connections to Flora and Mary, and the Windy Pine property.
