About Back Lane Studios

Back Lane Studios, located at 9 Neepawa Avenue in Toronto's Roncesvalles Village, is a not-for-profit arts hub dedicated to preserving stories, inspiring creativity, and building community through film, photography, and media. Founded in 2015 by journalist Ellen Moorhouse, the studio has become a vibrant gathering place for people of all ages to learn, create, and connect. Its "Mapping Our Memories" project, for example, empowers seniors to turn personal histories into short documentaries, capturing Toronto's evolving neighbourhoods through lived experience. Alongside adult workshops in documentary filmmaking, Back Lane Studios offers creative programs for children - ranging from PA Day and summer camps to hands-on courses in video, coding, and photography - encouraging the next generation to see storytelling as both art and heritage. The space also hosts exhibitions, community events, and screenings, fostering an inclusive environment where artists, students, and residents come together to celebrate local culture. With its grassroots energy and artistic purpose, Back Lane Studios stands as a cornerstone of creative expression in Toronto.
