About Wiseman's Corner Schoolhouse Heritage Centre

Located at 112 Midlothian Road in Ryerson Township, the Wiseman's Corner Schoolhouse Heritage Centre is a remarkable glimpse into pioneer life and early education in the Burk's Falls region. Originally built in 1893 by William Todd, the one-room schoolhouse served local children for over 45 years, providing a simple but vital place of learning in rural Ontario. Before its construction, children walked miles through bush trails and swampy ground to reach the earlier log schoolhouse, making this new location a welcome improvement for the community. The school officially closed in 1960, later serving as a township polling station before being transformed into a museum in 1997 under the stewardship of the Burk's Falls & District Historical Society. Today, visitors can step inside an authentic 19th-century classroom, complete with artifacts, period furnishings, and displays that highlight the struggles and determination of early settlers. Operated seasonally, the heritage centre preserves and shares the area's pioneer spirit, offering an educational and cultural experience for residents, students, and visitors to Muskoka and Almaguin Highlands.
